Compensation Practices at Gore
Gore is a company that promotes innovation. The company depends solely on employees to either implement new inventions or rather come up with the new ideas. Therefore, there is the need to motivate the employees by giving them compensations for work well done. Gore strives to achieve internal fairness and external competitiveness in its benefit plan where two approaches to achieve the goals is incorporated. The first approach is to cope with the external competitiveness and the second method is to cater for the internal competitiveness. The external approach is by comparing the pay with other competitive companies so as to ensure the best for the company in an aim of outdoing the competitors. The internal approach is where the coworkers rank each other by the contribution given back to the company at the end of the year where comment are given to identify strengths and weaknesses that need improvement.
Pros of external approach. As seen above, this is one of the compensation plan approaches. It brings advantages to the company in this sense; comparing payment to employees with other competitive companies brings an urge of outdoing the other. By this employee compensation will be good and staff will be loyal to the company and work efficiently.
Pros to the internal approach. The plan will increase employee morale to work with dedication by ensuring that they work to their level best so, at the time of ranking, they will get appraisals for an excellent contribution to the company thus reflecting a good pay.
Cons to the external approach. It is not considerate to compare a business with another. The reason for the statement being that the companies have different styles of carrying out activities, and therefore the compensation should be within the company's capability without straining.
Cons to the internal approach. The feedback from the employees may be biased, based on personal issues with the fellow employees thus resulting in a negative or positive feedback that is not genuinely.
Achievement of Gore's Goals on Internal Fairness and External Competitiveness
About the approaches used by Gore to achieve the goals, it is positive that the company has a high chance of achieving their goals. Both goals have strategies that cater for the accomplishment. It is evident of goals achievement using the approaches. Keeping in mind that everything that has advantages has disadvantages, the stronger side is of the advantages here.
