Management of Acute Exacerbation of Acute Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases (AECOPD)
Clinical Condition Definition
Lozano et al. (2012, p.2095) noted that chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the third main cause of mortality worldwide. Exacerbations suggest an acute deterioration of respiratory warning sign that requires an adjustment in treatment. Exacerbations have shown deep and long-lasting consequences on patients resulting in a poor quality of health by accelerating the advancement of the COPD. Despite the increased spending on the management of the condition, controversies exist over the definition, monitoring as well as underpinning mechanisms of exacerbations. Accordingly, no generally accepted definition for exacerbation of COPD exists because exacerbation has various severities and causes. Most healthcare practitioners perceive a more reasonable description that does not suggest severity or aetiology.
A report by the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) (2017) refined the Airway, Breathing, Circulation, and Disability (ABCD) evaluation tool, to use respiratory health indicators and exacerbations only to apportion ABCD classes (Vogelmeier et al. 2017; Mathioudakis et al. 2018).
