Leadership: A case Study of Disneyland
One of the key leadership skills outlined in the book, ‘Turn the Ship Around,’ is the ability to give control as opposed to taking it and developing leaders instead of forging followers (Marquet).
An example of a case that lends authority to this skill and postulation by David Marquet is that of Disneyland. Mr. Walt, one of the early bosses at Disneyland, did not have enough money to create movies. He mentioned to Mike, a leader at the company that his brother would not give him money to use in making movies. This did not discourage him or dissuade him from pushing on towards the achievement of his dreams.
Mike brought together a team of seven people as his initial employees. However, he made them feel as a part of a team of like-minded people as opposed to a group of subordinates whose role was not to merely take orders and implement them (Bradt). Members brought in ideas on how they could manage to make more money out of the park. One of the women suggested that they should open the park on Mondays and Tuesdays and offer discounts for corporates who let their employees visit the park on those two days. Mike and his team were open-minded and allowed the lady’s idea. The implementation of the idea achieved immense success.
