Women’s Sexuality in the 19th Century
Sexuality refers the differences that exhibit in living organisms in terms of sex and gender, which in many cases is seen as an erogenous practices, identities and desires or the aspects of social and personal life which gives an erotic significance (Sears, 2014, 4). Women’s sexuality defines the different roles and responsibility that are believed to be undertaken by women in the society. In the 19th century there were different gender roles that were considered only to be performed by women in terms of biological sex, gender roles, self-esteem, sexual orientation, relationships, communication, body image, personality, activity options, values and attitudes (Srebnick, 1997, 34).
During the 19th-century women, sexuality was a major theme practiced all over the world including the slave trade that used to export slaves from trans-Saharan Africa to USA and Europe. From the "Yellow Slavery, Narratives of Rescue”, the author clearly outlined all the roles of women and the misery they went through during the trade (Larsen, 2012, 17).
One of the significant consequences of the slavery trade in the nineteenth century was change of role since after all the men we taken as slaves many women were left in charge of households and taking care of the family in large. This overburdened women in the society as they were added an extra role to play in the society.
Sexual harassment and sex discrimination were also experienced in the 19th century since during the slave trade many women were raped by the slave traders and also by locals. This well outlined in the suit Sin far and it contributed to the loss of self-esteem among the abused women in the society. Many women were discriminated, and it was believed that their particular functions were domestic chores and taking care of the family.
Change of responsibility was also witnessed during the wars when many men run into the forest, women were left in charge of families and started taking over some chores that were believed to done by men. For example, women started taking care of herds of cattle, hunting and gathering among other responsibilities (Sears, 2014, 9)

Discrimination against women in the 19th century was high and women were believed to weak in the society compared to men, passive, domestic, illogical, social/family, timid, dependent, timid among others. Women were also discriminated in a leadership position, and this was a clear indication that women were entirely different from men (Larsen, 2012, 17).
The fact that women were not supposed to engage themselves in real sex before marriage and believed that they were meant to learn it during the wedding day from their husband. This shows that women and no say in the community compared to men since men were not answerable to anybody and nobody could have punished a man for having sex with another woman. This is also strengthened by the factor that a married man could marry another wife, but he insisted on having a virgin woman as his next wife (Srebnick, 1997, 74).
