International Business Communications: Unit 4 IP Deliverable Length: 800-1,000 words Your fast-food franchise has been cleared for business in all 4 countries (United Arab Emirates, Israel, Mexico, and China). You now have to start construction on your restaurants. The financing is coming from the United Arab Emirates, the materials are coming from Mexico and China, the engineering and technology are coming from Israel , and the labor will be hired locally within these countries by your management team from the United States. You invite all of the players to the headquarters in the United States for a big meeting to explain the project and get to know one another. In preparation for the meeting, you want to avoid cultural silos, while ensuring all parties engage with each other. Answer the following questions in preparation:. What do you know about these cultures—specifically their economic, political, educational, and social systems—that could help you in getting them together? What are some of the contrasting cultural values of these countries? As you begin to plan, you are concerned about some of the language barriers, particularly the fact that the United States is a low-context country, and some of the countries present are high-context countries. Furthermore, you only speak English, and you do not have an interpreter planned at this time. What strategy would you use to begin to have everyone develop a relationship with each other that will help ease future negotiations, development, and implementation? What are some of the issues you should be concerned about regarding verbal and nonverbal language for this group? International Business Communications
Good communication is essential in business when passing across ides and negotiating with partners and clients for business purposes. International businesses and corporations find themselves in different cultures and languages where they have to adapt and come up with ways to communicate to the customers, clients and partners. For starting businesses, it becomes complex especially when operating in a new business environment with diverse business cultures and languages. Cultural and language diversity practices are common in such an environment and they include cultural and language diversity which makes it necessary to develop approaches, styles, and tones of written and oral business communications. Operating restaurants in such a mixed environment, the business has to understand the various styles of verbal communication and understand the different cultural practices of the different partners in order to communicate and conduct business with them.
After getting clearance as a fast food franchise in four countries, the prospects have to go international. This will result to construction of more restaurants that will need huge amounts of funding because it is an investment. The four counties that include China, Israel, United Arab Emirates and Mexicoare partners in the business and hold different roles in the financing, offering materials, technology and engineering as well as the local labor for the construction and operation of the restaurants. Inviting the four partners into the headquarters in USA will result in creating a platform that will accommodate the culture and language diversity of each of the participants who are also the partners. The funding is from the UAE, materials from Mexico and China, and the engineering and technology from Israel. In such a platform, any cultural silos should be avoided for the funding and construction of the restaurants to be successful.
The United Arab Emirates is a rich collection of countries and have the necessary resources need to finance the restaurants. In order to get their funding, it will be efficient to conduct analysis on their culture and what it dictates when it comes to construction of restaurants (Pardy& Andrews, 2010). One major culture in the UAE is in their religion, which is Islam. This religion does not consume any kind of meat and foods. Getting their funding will therefore require a convincing verbal tone that the restaurants will take care of their cultural. The Muslims regard Halaal food as the blessed one that they should consume and as a presenter of the entrepreneurial idea, the idea has to be convincing. The Chinese have a different culture of eating almost every edible creature. Operating in such a cultural environment needs experts to construct the restaurant that will meet the different customer and client needs.
Israel has among the best technologies and engineering techniques in the world, which makes it necessary for the business to develop strong communication and relational ties with the country. This is because the technology might be called upon when the existing one fails or needs an upgrade. That availability of local labor will reduce costs of operation and since the restaurants will be set in the USA, as a low-context country, will make it easier to procure labor for construction as well as operation of the restaurants. Mexico will copartner with China in providing the required raw materials needed for the construction of the restaurants.Verbal communication requires participation by the different parties involved in the business negotiations.
The different styles of verbal communication include Expressive, aggressive and passive Style of Communication. The four countries have both the three different styles of verbal communication and when addressing each of them, it is important to take in to account their personal feeling and emotions. When presenting such a proposal especially to the UAE, one needs to be aggressive because the success of the restaurants depends on the funds that the funding authority will give. Language has big effect on communication especially in business negotiations. Some comments by the speaker may be perceived to be negative while it was not the intention of the speaker.
A miscommunicated concept may also raise emotions and spark different feelings among the partners. Verbal communication also requires one to be audible to the audience for them to get the clear picture and understand every concept on how the funding, construction and operation of the restaurants will be (Frank et al., 2008). Because of the diverse cultures, the negotiation process will have to be inclusive and if the partners do not understand the English language, then interpreters will be hired to translate and develop a good communication environment. For instance, the Chinese culture speaks fast but does not have a heavy accent when it comes to the English culture. Compared to the Israel and Chinese culture, the Arabian and Mexican cultures have heavy accents when they speak in English because it is not among their first languages. When negotiating, it will be key to pay close attention in order to pick up the main ideas and concepts in the negotiations.
