Multilingualism is the aptitude to fluently converse and express oneself in more than two languages competently. Language is a conduit for interconnectedness across continents, nations, regions, and localities. Multilingual education exposes monolinguals to a second or a third language, which velarizes multiculturalism and multilingualism. In an age where almost half of the global populace speaks a second language, multilingual education contributes to cognitive development, academic performance, cultural awareness, and communication proficiency.
Multilingual education expands children’s cognitive functions culminating in improved academic performance. Children commence learning a second language right from a tender age “are more perceptive and intellectually flexible than those who speak one language” (Okal, 2014, p. 226). Multilingually edified children are “superior lateral thinkers, have greater social adaptability, their thinking and reasoning skills are better, and their cognitive abilities are also greater” as attested to by their higher scores on standardized tests compared to those who speak a single language solely (Okal, 2014, p. 227). The challenge to learn a second, a third or a fourth language sharpens young minds by challenging their mental, reasoning, and thinking acuity. Therefore, their mental capacity is higher than monolingual children and, as such, they perform exceptionally better than those who converse in one language only.
