My experience with inclusion of ‘differently enabled’ people in school or at work has been nice. You get to realise that this people are very talented and have a different perspective of things. They can make friends when they are around people and have a very high tolerance of people. The only thing I noticed they don’t like is pity from people and people assuming that they are incapable of doing their own things. The way they interact with their peers makes them have a chance in a normal life. They also are quick to learn general social skills and build meaningful relationships with people.
There are several advantages and disadvantages to labelling of any person as a ‘special needs’ individual. One advantage of labelling is that the person gets special attention and as a result their needs are met CITATION Fra07 \l 2057 (Fraser Lauchlan, 2007). They get extra support from the people around them. Whereas the disadvantage is that it results to low self-esteem in the labelled individual, they keep doubting themselves and feel helpless. People have lower expectations of the individuals who are labelled. This sets up learners for failure. There are peer issues too because their mates make fun of them and it may lead to problems of interacting with others, they hardly make friends.
My experience on inclusion has had both good things about it and bad things. I experienced that when individuals with special needs are included they are able to make friends and live a normal life. You realise that no man is an island all of us need friends in our lives. It also helps other people in the society to accept them for who they are, the more they experience them the easier it is to interact with them. Although I have to admit that this inclusion process also has its challenges. On the side of inclusion for learners a challenge comes when there are not enough resources to for them in inclusive schools, especially when the curriculum being taught does not fit with them mentally. Also it is impossible rush an employee with special needs if want the work to be a success. Also inclusion has another challenge of individuals with special needs playing minor roles because of the mentality people have on this group.
