The 9th-grade class I am designing this math lesson for consists of students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds, including those with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), and English Language Learners (ELLs). The school district and cooperating teacher emphasize the importance of differentiated instruction and promoting equitable learning opportunities for all students.
The lesson aims to help grade 9 students understand the process of solving radical equations. By incorporating both online and face-to-face components, this blended lesson will provide opportunities for virtual collaboration and in-person discussions. The lesson will guide students through the steps involved in solving radical equations and will encourage them to apply their knowledge to real-world scenarios.
How is Theory applied in this lesson?
In this lesson, the educational theory of Constructivism will be applied. Constructivism posits that students construct their knowledge and understanding through active engagement with meaningful tasks, social interactions, and reflection on their experiences (Hmelo-Silver, 2004). By incorporating hands-on activities and real-world examples, students will have the opportunity to actively explore solving radical equations, make connections between theory and practice, and construct their understanding of the topic.

MEASURABLE OBJECTIVE What will your students be able to do?
The students will be able to solve radical equations by applying appropriate techniques, such as factoring, isolating the radical term, and squaring both sides. They will demonstrate this understanding by interpreting and analyzing the solutions of radical equations through collaboration and assessments. Understanding will be demonstrated by accurately solving 15 radical equations with 80% accuracy using a combination of algebraic techniques. Students will also be able to explain the significance of extraneous solutions in the context of radical equations.
