Robinson Crusoe Essay
Robinson and Englishman at an early age in 17th century left home as a ‘prodigal son’ to sea adventure. He later found himself in an isolated island where he struggled towards the will of God living a lonely life. Finally this led him to spiritual awakening, atonement and conversion to Christianity.
Robinson Crusoe as a young adventurer defied succession of providential warnings from his parents. They wanted him to take a career in law and warned him from going to the sea but he ignored. His Sea adventure led to series of challenges including encountering terrible storms that wrecked the ship casting him ashore as the only survivor. He encountered cannibals, lived a lonely life and later enslaved with prisoners. Christian virtues showed him a sense of various twists and turns in his life. The idea of divine providence became important aspect in his life. He realized that even bad circumstances are made divine providence by God. He was protected by God from the cannibals and violent storm and blessed with plenty provision while in island. From repentance Robinson was no longer lonely in the island, he saved Friday from cannibals and converted him to Christianity (Defoe & Malvina, 109).
Lonely in the island, Crusoe, was hit by self-awareness. Visionary dream that God threatened him resulted in understanding Gods will in his life. God wanted him to find His way through trials and tribulations he went through. Robinson referred his disobedience as original sin that caused fall of man in Eden through Adam’s rebellion (Defoe & Malvina, 34). Robinson repented as a result of Gods mercy and grace manifestation in his life. He learnt that his own visions are limited and Gods visions are perfect and complete. Bad circumstance can be made by Divine Providence into a conduit of God blessings and provision. He learnt to be studying and reading the Bible regularly (Defoe & Malvina, 88). Crusoe then onwards realized advantages of seeking deliverance from sin rather than deliverance from affliction.
After repentance, Robinson experienced more miracles through growing of his first crop and arrival of England captain. On seeing the mutineers, Friday and Robinson confronted them except the captain (Defoe & Malvina, 175). They surrendered, thinking that the captain and Crusoe owned the island territory.
