INTRODUCTION
Testing effect is a scientific finding that the retention rate of information by learners tends to improve when the learners are subjected to questions on topics that they have learned in class. Testing has been found to be an effective strategy of enhancing long-term memory to learners. Long term memory in human beings have unlimited capacity. Nevertheless, information that is stored in long-term memory can never be of much help to human beings unless it's recalled or retrieved. Testing involves the act of recalling and retrieving stored information in the brains of human beings. Whenever learners retrieve information from their brains, the builds a new connection between synapses in the human brain, and therefore this result in consolidation of related information in the brain making it easier to access or recall the same information in the future.
EVIDENCE REVIEW FOR THE EFFECT FROM PEER-REVIEWED JOURNALS
Agarwal et al (2017) conducted a study on a group of learners in a class where students were learning the Swahili language at the college level. They requested the learners to prepare for a test in two different approaches, one group was requested to prepare for the test through reading without testing themselves while the other group was asked to prepare through testing and making corrections on the words they fail to comprehend right. After some time, they gave the learners a test on Swahili words, the students who used tests to prepare for the main test recalled over 80% of the words while those who just read without tests recalled only 35% of the words.
