Abstract
Mother-tongue language has vital importance for an individual and its significance cannot be neglected. There is a significant association between mother language, identity, and educational achievement. Recently, the Chinese Community Party (CCP) has pressurised the Tibetan monasteries to not offer Tibetan language classes, which has eventually provoked human rights activists to raise voice against the ban. The CCP has strongly focused on working over the years to evacuate the traditional culture of Tibet and aims to replace it slowly with the communist ideology. Learning in the mother tongue can help to attain the desired academic achievements. It helps in setting free the expressive potential of the individual. It is argued that both foreign language and mother language can help improve the brain functionality of individuals. Hence, the Chinese community should consider the fact that Tibetan people belong to Tibet and they have an emotional attachment with their mother language. Different nations should unite and raise voice against the injustice being done to Tibetan people. The element of multilingualism encourages the individual to speak both mother and foreign language. This paper aims to critically evaluate the significance of mother tongue maintenance and its association with educational achievement and identity.
Introduction
Mother-tongue language has vital importance for a person and its significance cannot be neglected. Speaking the mother language tends to be significant for the overall development of a person. It aims to connect him/her to his culture, helps in learning different languages and assures proper cognitive development. Educational achievement and mother-tongue have a vital association with each other. Being a language teacher, I argue that mother-tongue should be encouraged in a classroom in order to enable students understand its importance. The element of multilingualism can have a significant impact on educational achievement. This paper aims to critically evaluate the significance of mother tongue maintenance and its association with educational achievement and identity, considering Tibet as an example.
