Anaphora:
‘People in my electorate do not want special treatment; they want justice and fairness. They want decent roads and hospitals. They want the same opportunities as others.’
‘Owning a property should not be the great Australian dream; it should be the great Australian norm.’
‘Jihad is charity, jihad is service, and jihad is support of others.’
‘If I was not clear enough, let me say it again: Education is the great leveller.’
Mr Jihad used Anaphora by repeating the phrase ’They want’ three times. This asserts the needs of his electorates, which are similar to those of other Australians and states that they are not looking for any special treatment. Mr. Jihad also used anaphora in other instances of the speech and repeated the phrase ’in my electorate’ to remind the listener that he is alluding to the electorate of Lakemba.
Similarly, he uses anaphora to contrast the supposed great Australian dream from what should be the great Australian norm. Anaphora is also used in demystifying the word ‘jihad’ to highlight the true meaning of jihad and discard the negative connotations associated with the word. Mr Jihad repeats the phrase, ’education is the great leveller’ to lay emphasis on the power of education to counter social disadvantages and equalise people from different backgrounds and residences.
Alliteration:
‘Former Premier and member for Lakemba, the Hon. Morris Lemma, retains a lasting legacy for the changes he implemented’
‘People of my electorate talk of how they are regularly misunderstood and of the ways in which they suffer from a stigma of superficial analysis.
‘It is a fascinating fusion of modern day Australia’
‘I am a proud product of the public education system.’
The use of ‘lasting legacy’ is an alliteration to describe the contribution of his predecessor in improving community facilities. The speaker also uses the alliteration, ‘suffer from a stigma of superficial analysis,’ to illustrate how his electorates have been misunderstood and depicted biasedly in stories. He uses the alliteration, ‘fascinating fusion’ to describe the multiculturalism in the electorate of Lakemba, which is composed of different cultural groups. Mr Jihad uses alliteration, ’proud product of the public education system’ to highlight his experience within the public education system as an English and History teacher and as the principal of Punchbowl Boys High School and how mentorships and encounters within the public education system have shaped him as a leader, for instance, he has come to view education as being the great leveller and to advocate for access to quality education for all regardless of one’s area of residence.
Anamnesis:
‘When my grandfather wore this watch he never imagined that in a different time I would be standing in the oldest Parliament of Australia, delivering my inaugural address, wearing his very same timepiece...’
‘Many know the story of my principalship of Punchbowl Boys High School. On the verge of closure, it had become better known forits violence, dysfunction and sense of defeatism…’
‘Like most of Australia, the first migrants into Lakemba were the British and Irish. The Greeks arrived later, then the Vietnamese and Lebanese. Over the past decade many migrants from China, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, Bangladesh and New Zealand have joined us.’
Mr Jihad employs anamnesis in his speech by recollecting how his grandfather gave him the timepiece that he was wearing and the virtues that his grandfather’s generation instilled in him such as respect for others and belief that anything is possible. In another excerpt, Mr Jihad uses anamnesis his time as a high school teacher and how he helped reform the school from near closure, due to indiscipline, by inspiring the students to be better. He then asserts that education is the great leveller and advances his policy on educational equality. Similarly, Mr Jihad uses anamnesis to trace the origins of the present occupants of Lakemba and explain how the different cultural groups therein came to be. This also serves to promote cultural tolerance.
Metaphor:
‘The electorate of Lakemba is a tapestry of Australian multiculturalism, with 47 per cent
