Art has been an instrumental tool in driving social change. Over the years, artists such as writers and painters have played a central role in influencing change in the society through their work. One of such influential artists is Simone de Beauvoir. De Beauvoir is considered one of the most influential feminist writers. Her works such as the Second Sex were pivotal in inspiring other female writers to write about the plight of women in the then significantly patriarchal society. Besides, the ever-growing force of the feminist movement attributes its foundation to the unique works and thinking of De Beauvoir.
De Beauvoir outlines an interesting understanding of feminism and what it means. According to Simons, Benjamin, and de Beauvoir (1979, p. 333), de Beauvoir defines feminism as “a leftist movement which would most radically transform society”. The context in which de Beauvoir bases her definition is on the relationship between men and women in the society. As a result, the radical changes that she is talking about are those relating to the society’s view on the role of women and their relationship with the masculine gender.
