Abstract
This paper explores features of the nature and some of the requirements of integrity with a view to Understanding more clearly the concept of integrity for professionals in healthcare might be, and the reasons it is important. It will be clearly recognized that integrity is not as simple as a concept as it first may appear to be. The paper offers an account of the concept of integrity in ensuring the best quality and safety of a patient under professional healthcare. Integrity is seen in its capacity to deliberate and reflect usefully in the light practices to the context of respect, honesty, trust and accountability (that of self and others) on complex and contradictory aspects bearing on action or possible action. In addition, the article uses scripture quotes to give comprehensive meaning and requirement of integrity.
Integrity is the eminence or form of being of sound moral value; uprightness, honesty, and sincerity. As seen in Proverbs 10:9 He who walks in integrity walks surely, but he who takes crooked path will be found out, Integrity can also be defined as acting in accordance with general ethical principles and rules that is the moral integrity.
Integrity is a complex and imperative concept in ethical reasoning and in care of a patient. Integrity is seen as part of being a human being, wholeness, and in this sense it also refers to health. Integrity is an element of quality health care (Emanuel, Berwick, & Conway, 2008), and suggests that the patient is perceived as a unique person and provided with an opportunity to be autonomously and to define the control of his/her life and to protect him/herself.
During patient care, many factors such as illness, involvements, loss of identity, lack of accurate information, reliance on others and the disparity of power between patient and professional caregivers can intensify the patient’s vulnerability (Loewy, 2002). Patient caregivers can threaten the patient’s integrity by performing action of an undesired manner and violating his/her different selves, for instance, the personal or family self and usual nursing actions such as in assistance with bodily care can threaten a patient’s integrity. Professional caregivers have a greater influence on patient contentment and the main predictor is the nature of the care provided by nurses, while protecting the patient’s integrity can reduce their vulnerability (Loewy, 2002). It is important for professional caregivers to treat patient with sound ethical and moral value in the same way that we are encouraged to do in Luke 6; 31" and as we wish that others would do to us, we should do so to them”
Preserving patients' integrity is important aspects of healthcare providers, as several situations may arise in which they can feel threatened or unsafe. Professional caregivers have to be cognizant of their vital part they play in enhancing patients’ ability to preserve their integrity. Professional caregivers can display the patient respect by regarding them as an individual, being concerned and treating him/her in the similar manner as his/her fellow patients regardless of disease, profession or social status, as the scripture in Colossians 3;23 says "everything you do, do it heartily, as for the might Lord and not for men,”. Showing respect also means that professional caregivers have to be trusted by the patient to ‘visit’ his/her personal spaces. 2 Corinthians 8:21 for we aim at what is honorable in the eyes of the Lord and of man, In order to demonstrate respect, there are some circumstances and actions in regular practice that have to be cautiously considered, for example not revealing the patient’s body, or treating and considering an adult patient like a minor, in addition to safeguarding information about the patient and keeping it confidential. Giving respect to patient and showing them impartiality means that a professional caregivers lives to the words of scripture in Luke 16; 10, which says "He that is faithful in that which is a least is also faithful in much, and He who is untruthful in a very little is also untruthful in much." therefore, if healthcare professional are capable of treating a patient with respect much is expected of them for instance ensuring that patient are given the right quality of healthcare that they deserve.
According to Carmi, Wax & Universiṭat Ḥefah (2002), there is nothing more important to ensuring integrity in a patient care than caregiver staying true to his/her word. Throughout a usual shift, a nurse interacts with many people and it can be very easy for him/ her to inadvertently forget to follow up on activity required. However less significant it may seem, to fail to live up to your word can have severe effects, therefore, it is important to take careful measure possible to avoid compromising the integrity of one’s responsibility.
