Eating disorder is a condition that is characterized by extreme dietary consumption habits and immense concern and distress over one’s body shape. The most prevalent forms of eating disorders include Bulimia Nervosa, Anorexia Nervosa, and Binge Eating Disorder. The causes of eating disorders are relatively diverse, ranging from biological factors such as irregularity in hormone functioning to psychological factors such as negative perceptions of self, and environmental factors such as peer pressure and family perceptions. In this accord, having a vivid understanding of the causative factors of Nancy’s eating disorder, spearheads the fundamentals of the therapy session. In this regard, it is paramount that I as the therapist help Nancy to embrace and get over traumatizing scenarios that may be capacitating her past. In so doing, I would be keen on restoring self-worth and boosting Nancy’s esteem. Furthermore, it is prudent to bring to Nancy’s attention the varies disparities associated with eating disorders. Hence, it is important that she adopts remarkable coping skills, effective communication, indulging in healthy relationships, and practicing healthy eating habits (Espejo, 2012).
Diagnosis and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder fifth edition (DSM), developed in 1999-2013 provided a revolutionary computer interphase that is more user-friendly, as compared to the earlier versions of DSM. Moreover, the aligning of the DSM-5 to both ICD-9 and ICD-10 has been achieved. Harmonization of both diagnostic tools is meant to encapsulate both the psychological aspect and the medical aspects in the diagnosis process of eating disorders. Furthermore, other techniques that I will use in the diagnosis of eating disorders include screening and online personal assessment (Klott, 2012).
