1) What do the Chinese agricultural worker and the agricultural workers of today (Central and South American) have in common?
The Chinese American agricultural workers significantly contributed to the Western United States' development. They initiated that increase in food and agricultural production by introducing vegetables and fruits, increasing land values. Takaki indicated that Chinese agricultural workers changed farming and production in California by expanding the practice in the central valley and beyond. In 1880 Chinese made up the majority of the labor force, up o 68%. These practices are still in play in Central and South America. For instance, Mexicans work on farms and produce fruits such as avocados and vegetables. However, there is still cheap labor and disciplinary tool for striking workers. Takaki argues that exclusion laws and cheap labor were established to improve white classism and keep the working class poor.
