Although the U.S. prisons are meant to be correctional facilities for the offenders, they are currently more focused onpunishing the inmates rather than rehabilitating them. As a result, the incarceration system is not working as the focus on punishment leads to a high recidivism rate.

The Corrections in the USA ought to be more focused on integratingoffendersback into the community. They should be built around providing the necessary physical and social skills to help those who have served their sentences adjust after the release.

There are two main reforms that could improve the current prison system. First, to manage the inmate population successfully, a reductionof the jail sentences should be implemented to avoid overcrowding.Second, an alternative approach couldbe to focus less on punishment and more on integratingoffendersback into the community.For instance, the Norway's prison system attempts to provide the environment that resembles normal conditions outside of the prison as much as possible. Consequently, rehabilitation occurs more frequently there, which is reflected in thelow level of recidivism(“Global Lessons on Prisons”). Similarly, prisoners could be incarcerated in open places and allowed to work andearn wages outside of the prison, a policy successfully adopted in Denmark (“Global Lessons on Prisons”). Putting offenders under a minimal security regime would ensure that inmates are in a more social environment and are not isolated completely from the society,which could enable them to integrate back into the community more easily.
