Globalization of Healthcare
Globalization of Health Care is the process where medical procedures and processes are sought for outside the boundaries of a patient’s country of origin. The ever-increasing cost of medical care is putting pressure on the sector to search for less expensive alternatives. In some instances, patients choose to avoid delays related to long queues to get an appointment with professionals who provide these services, especially where there is control to access as the resources are limited. In this case, easy availability is a factor in accessing this important service. In some cases, patients go abroad because of the confidentiality and privacy aspects, especially whenever one wants to go for plastic surgery and sex change procedures.
Positive Impacts of Globalization of Healthcare
Due to the advances in technology and efficiency in the industry, the global market provides the necessary impetus for even better services. Coupled with the availability of the disposable income available to the Americans, it is possible to have income that could be used in other parts of the economy. This enables U.S. to embark on the serious improvement of the Health sector. This sets them apart from the rest of the developing world, in terms of equipment and know-how (Cooper, 2013).
Because of globalization developing countries attract foreign patients to their clinics through advertisement of their services. This trend, therefore, is now used as a means to attract foreign investments. The quality of healthcare is improved as a result of globalization to make the services competitive so as to attract consumers. The globalization of healthcare services have contributed to an upsurge of medical tourism, patients travel for treatments and other medical procedures for relatively lower costs as compared to what is charged at home.
Globalization has allowed for the growth of career opportunities for healthcare personnel, thereby encouraging integration of healthcare services (Cooper, 2013). This has helped in collaboration among different experts and provided an opportunity for exchange program for research and development of the Health Care systems in the World.
Negative Impacts of Globalization of Healthcare
Globalization of healthcare is likely to cause a brain drain in developing nations (Cohen, 2013). This is the situation where medical personnel go to look for greener pastures in developed countries. The poorer countries are left with few qualified people to provide services locals. The developing nations healthcare sector in these countries are left struggling to manage their healthcare systems.
