"A Company that deserves a Union gets one," (Q1)
I agree with the philosophy that “a company that deserves a union gets one” because, in most instances, employees join unions due to the dissatisfaction they get from how the management treats them. Most workers believe that a union would make things better in a workplace. Mostly, employees unionize when they think that the institution is unfair, unresponsive, or it provides an inferior working environment to them. An organization can develop an environment where the employees will have no desire for a union in various ways. The first way is by ensuring a competitive pay and benefits to the employees. The company can also prevent the formation of unions by establishing fair and consistent practices and policies. Lastly, the company can do so by ensuring that they build their employees trust and develop an employee recognition approach (Fearn-Banks, 2016).
Non- economic Means of Impasse Resolution (Q2)
Mediation and fact finding are two good examples of non-economic means of impasse resolution. Mediation involves the selection of a neutral person to help the two parties in the negotiation. During the consultation process, the selected mediator controls the whole process. He/she decides how the session will take place, who to speak first, and the time each party should take. The parties give their views in turns, and the mediator may ask for clarifications. The mediation process has some advantages and disadvantages. The first advantage is that each party has a bargaining power and the relationship between the two may not be broken. Secondly, mediation helps the disputing parties to generate a solution for the problem even in the future. The disadvantageous thing about this method is that it may take many sessions before reaching a solution. Secondly, it may be very expensive to pay a good mediator (Craver, 2013).
Fact finding is an informal way of negotiation. In fact finding, the disputants choose a third neutral party who listens on each person’s side of view and then investigates on the issue. After investigating the issue, the neutral party submits a report that contains the facts about the issue. The advantage of fact finding is that it gives room for the public recommendation and it includes facts when resolving the problem. The drawback is that it wastes a lot of time to gather the facts and generate a report (Craver, 2013).
The Advantages and Disadvantages of Seniority (Q4)
Seniority in some companies is considered regarding the time and employee has worked in the business, the time the employee has worked in a particular position and even on the full-time basis. While determining overtime tasks or shift preference, the seniority concept may result in some positives and negatives. One advantage is that the employees are granted rights based on their length of service. Secondly, employees receive privileges based on their experience. The company assumes that the employee has gained more experience than the new worker. The negative thing about the seniority system is that it creates job insecurity, and the less favored employee may look for a job elsewhere thus leading to declining in the workforce. Lastly, being a senior employee does not necessarily mean that the employee is more productive than a new one and the company might be shunning a more productive one (Wiriyapinit, 2016).
