The Gender Attitude and Belief Inventory
The Gender Attitude and Belief Inventory (GABI) test results show fifteen points on the liberal feminism theory. The results show that I strongly agree with the views of a liberal feminist. According to Jones and Budig (2008), liberal feminists believe that women and men are both disadvantaged by society's expectations of gender; therefore, reforms in the education and legal systems should bring about gender equality. I am not surprised by the results; I have always believed in and supported gender equality views. I, however, did not know that my views match the views of liberal feminists. The results partially match my attitude towards feminism. I have always viewed feminism from a radical feminists point of view. According to Jones & Budig (2018), a radical feminist believes that only women are oppressed by the social systems founded on patriarchy. I think women are oppressed, but men are also oppressed. Therefore, the solution is not to abolish patriarchy as radical feminists propose but through education, legal and social changes to ensure equality in both genders. Thus, the GABI assessment test has helped me clarify my views and label myself a feminist advocating for both genders.
The lowest score on my GABI assessment test is six on the structural-functionalist theory. According to the test results, I do not entirely agree with the structural-functionalist, a conservative approach. A structural functionalist theorist believes that gender helps structure the social life and provides complementary roles for women and men (Archibong, 2016). Structural functionalist theorists advocate that the outlined gender roles need to be maintained for a society to thrive. Its description displays a mismatch with my overall views on feminism. Before the test, I believed that supporters of feminism advocate for the abolition of only the female roles in society. On the other hand, the structural-functionalist theorist views advocates for retaining the gender roles for the well-being of social structures such as families. This view contradicts the feminist goals by advocating gender inequality.
After participating in the GABI assessment test, I realized I did not understand feminism well enough. Although I have always considered myself a partial feminist, I drew this conclusion of feminism definition from the media and activists. I have always assumed that feminism leans more on the actualization of female gender rights. The GABI assessment test and class discussion have significantly transformed my understanding of feminism. I have realized that I was misinformed, and feminism is more than female empowerment. The GABI test did not alter my views; however, it has helped me polish up my opinions on feminism, recognize external influences on my personal belie
