Ethical issues affecting any organization are determined by the rights, duties, and responsibilities that an organization has in fulfilling the needs of the employees, customers, and the needs of its immediate environment (Brown, 2006). Corporate ethics is therefore considered to be a form of professional business ethics. Primarily such ethical requirements are required to control the moral and the ethical problems that may arise within a business setting. In the same way, good corporate practices and policies are called for to help in curbing the negative effects of lack of adequate ethical standards in an organizational setting (Pinchot, & Pinchot, 1997). One of the corporate ethical topics that a business has to deal with is the subject of integrity.
Integrity is necessary for any business operation since the lack of trust among employees, and the management may result in reduced performance. Duggar (2011) defines integrity as the system of principles that guides how an individual behaves. The rewards of integrity can be felt by the person himself or herself. Correspondingly, integrity is considered to be an individual’s choice rather than an obligation and therefore it cannot be forced or determined by external factors. Integrity, to a larger extent, is determined by the exposure and the upbringing of an individual (Duh, & Belak, 2009). Integrity has become a critical component of the modern corporate setting due to the requirement by managers and employers for high standards of performance and consistency (Byrne, 2002). Such values can define integrity as objectivity, loyalty, dependability, honesty, and respect for other principles. Additionally, integrity is considered to be a professional and personal asset that the employees get to use each day they report to work.
In the light of this, it is eminent that both integrity and corporate ethics share a dynamic relationship where each of the two is necessary for strengthening or reinforcing the other (Duggar, 2011). For this reason, the lack of integrity among the management and the employees would result in failure of the business as a whole. Good corporate ethics encourage integrity in all sectors of operation (Brown, 2006). Developing high levels of integrity at a personal level means that an individual is in a position to align his or her performance to the ethical standards set by an organization. This affirms to the need of integrity as a moral requirement in the corporate world.
Therefore, it would be substantial for any team to work towards maintaining the levels of integrity among all of its employees. An organization should be in a position where it can identify the clear signs that indicate the presence of the lack of integrity among its workforce. Employees should go through an evaluation on a regular basis, and their self-esteem boosted through various reward methods to improve their confidence and integrity (Pinchot, G., & Pinchot, 1997). By maintaining high levels of integrity, an organization can develop trust which acts as the basis of collaborative and interpersonal relationships. Other ways of improving integrity in an organization are by encouraging participation and feedback that are essential in articulating the culture of the business and its performance (Byrne, 2002).
