Voting Turnout and its Implications
Voting, by principle is the most apparent form of political participation and also the best activity for the citizens to participate and express their political views and political aims. It is a basic right for an individual to choose or elect their representative. Voting defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary, is the official choice that you make in an election, meeting, etc., by casting a ballot, raising your hand, speaking your choice aloud, etc. Voting turnouts however, is a concept that needs to be analyzed, what does it mean, what are the implications does it have on the political arena and what are the causes of it. The panel that I have chosen discussed about voting turnout as a form of political participation. They deliberated topics and concepts about the turnouts of voting and gave significance on the turnouts based on different factors.
The first panel discussed about the statistical data of voter turnouts in the Philippines. The panel showed statistical data that compared the number and percentage of registered voters with voters who actually voted during elections of the whole country. Voting turnout from different years starting from 1978 to 2010, based on the national and local elections, such as presidential, legislative and barangay elections. Since the Philippines as a country have a very diverse geographic setting, the panel also discussed about the voting turnout per region. According to the panelist, that the voting turnout of the Philippines was declining starting from 1978 to 2010 but by small percentage and still has huge percentage of registered voters participating in the elections.
