Abraham Lincoln put the United States on a pedestal in 1863 when he declared it a nation "for the people, by the people." It was a precedent realized in the post-civil war era , saying that the people were the ultimate decision-makers in running the country. In contrast, the powers of Europe at the time such as Britain, Spain and Germany, and Russia all had monarchies and elite class of people making significant decisions. The first evidence for the power of the people came through the ballot- especially presidential elections. Ordinary citizens of the United States exercised their will and freedom to choose leaders. In 1863, the idea that ordinary people could decide on major political events was laughable, but in 2019, it is the benchmark of excellent leadership. Democracy may have several flaws, but as of the moment, it is the best form of government ever. This paper will examine the milestones and historical events from 1918 until now that has led to the version of democracy in which the United States espouses and prides itself.[1 Chapters, All. 2019.
