Introduction
The organization behavior entails the human behavior in the work environment (Lombardo, 2015). The way employees behave in at their various workstations will significantly determine their productivity. The organizational behavior is the study of both group and individual activities within the workplace or organization (Lombardo, 2015).
Task 1
1.1 Compare and contrast the organization structure and culture of ASDA PLC to that of British Airlines.
The organizational structure of an organization is the Chain of command that runs from the top most employees to the subordinate staff. The organization structure of most organizations begins with the executives at the top, followed by managers, then the departmental heads/ supervisors and then the rest of the subordinate employees. All employees need to respect the organization structure especially when communicating. Most organization frown upon the action of subordinates trying to communicate directly with the executives without following the right chain of command.
The organization behavior on the other hand encompasses many aspects of the organization employees. It’s made up of the individual employee behavior in regards to their fashion, attitude, dress code, beliefs and values (studyandjobs.com, 2015). The most recent developments in organization behavior are teamwork, leadership, and performance evaluation. The organization behavior of employees should be in line with the company’s goals and objectives. A business that sells goods and services in multi-step processes will need a good organization structure and behavior that fosters teamwork. Such a business cannot afford to have employees who hate each other or do not like working in teams. The same applies to businesses that offer professional services. The employees of such a business should have the behavior of dressing well, courtesy and handling the clients professionally.
ASDA PLC is a retailer focused on selling food clothes and electronics. This supermarket is a subsidiary of Walmart, the largest supermarket chain in the world (businesscasestudies.com, 2015). The organizational structure of ASDA PLC is a hierarchy tree with a few people at the top and many others at the bottom. The executives make big decisions when need be. The bottom level management and supervisors are tasked with making minor decisions that affect the day-to-day running of the business. According to ASDA PLC’s CEO, the philosophy for the business is that, if people working with you then the customers will enjoy shopping with you. (businesscasestudies.com, 2015). This philosophy forms the basis of the organization structure. The main element of the organization culture is trust. The employees trust each other and treat one another with respect. Other organization behavior that contribute to the success of ASDA PLC are; to provide excellent service to the customers, show respect for the individual, strive for excellence, and to act with integrity. These are the driving forces of this supermarket chain. All new employees are initiated to this culture before they commence their duties. Any employee found to act against the organization culture is liable for disciplinary action.
The British Airlines is a company that offers air transport services for its clients. It has both passenger and cargo planes. This company is among the best airlines in the world. Because the company is huge with many branches all over the world, the organization structure needs to be well made articulated. The airline is trying to change the way of running the company from fixed span of control to small ad hoc groups. The airline’s organization culture is aimed at improving customer satisfaction. The culture involves; dealing fairly, updating the customer base, maintaining the high standards, meeting customer needs efficiently and re-enforcing successful tasks (academia.edu, 2015).
1.2 Explain how the relationship between Asda’s structure and culture impacts on its performance.
The human resource department, which forms part of Asda’s organization structure, is responsible for Asda’s human resource management. HRM involves work planning, recruitment, training, appraisal and employee motivation (Businesscasestudies.com, 2015). It’s through HRM that the company selects good employees who maintain the culture of the business hence its success. The rigorous selection process ensure that only the best candidates join the Asda team. The lucrative salaries offered attract many applicants for a particular job position. The automatic selection program also fastens the process which would otherwise overrun its time budget due to the large number of applications received. After recruitment, the new employees trained in a four-week induction program to ensure that they get to know about the company’s values and mode of operation.
This relationship between this recruitment process and the organization culture lies in the fact that only good employees are brought on board. These are employees who have integrity, can treat the customer...
