Reflective Essay on a Critical Thinking Course
This course is all about critical thinking techniques to students that enable them to become greater scholars who do not take in academic knowledge without subjecting it to severe scrutiny. It helps in changing learners’ view of the world by encouraging them to ascertain the degree of truth before accepting new information. This article analyses how I have been able to change and enhance my knowledge base after taking a critical thinking course.
Chapter 1: The Benefits of Asking the Right Questions
I am a student who is taking an English course in college that offers a wide range of educational training that imparts various skills on learners. In this particular course, I have learnt about critical thinking that is enhancing my way of reasoning and problem solving techniques. Before undertaking this course, it was not easy to compose and pose the right questions whenever there is any academic or other social discussion or debate. I was a person who used to pose questions without analysing them critically in order to ascertain their degree of accuracy and logic. This course is extremely essential in enhancing me to come up with right questions during debates and discussion since it gives me the necessary tools of analysis and evaluation. These tools enable me to subject my questions to logical scrutiny that enables me to ascertain their degree of truth.
Chapter 4: What Words or Phrases are Ambiguous?
This course has enabled me to learn and appreciate ambiguity. Before enrolling for this course, I neither knew nor appreciated ambiguity. I was unable to identify it and devise mechanisms of dealing with it. I have realised that ambiguity refers to a phrase or a word that has more than one meaning. I have been able to learn various types of ambiguity and their philosophical relevance. This course stipulates that ambiguity is either structural or lexical depending on its distinct nature. I have learnt how to solve the ambiguity by use of context, which implies that a certain piece of data may be unambiguous in one context and ambiguous in another. The knowledge of ambiguity is extremely essential in the learning and teaching of English language since it helps in putting various phrases or words in their rightful context.
Chapter 5: What are the Value Conflicts and Assumptions?
Before taking this course, I was not fully aware of the value conflicts and assumptions. It was easy for somebody to convince me and make me believe a particular position by offering extremely shallow explanations. I in most cases seen almost every argument as sensible. My perception has changed greatly since now I look for unstated or hidden beliefs that are significant in understanding a particular argument.
