Discussion on the Risk Factors and Cardiovascular Assessment Tools for Type 1 Diabetes Patients Name Course Tutor Institution Department Date Assessment of Risk Factors Type 1 diabetes accounts for ten percent of patients diagnosed with diabetes. Pancreatic islet autoantibodies have been proposed as the guidelines in the assessment of risk inType 1 Diabetes. Assessment of patients with Type 1 diabetes aims at providing support and advising the patient on how to cope with the chronic disease. We risk assessing patients with Type 1 diabetes by undertaking an initial assessment of the health and lifestyle, physical examination and laboratory investigations. Patient family history may help to determine the risk factors and symptoms of potential complications of Type 1 diabetes. Physical examination is essential to educate the patient’s and enable them to monitor their lifestyle. The general assessment tool used in the initial stages of analysis is to plan and determine the care for the patients. Patient’s weight and height are taken to determine body mass. Measurement of blood pressure, ensures patients maintains the diastolic and systolic targets to prevent coronary heart disease. Practitioners do laboratory examination of blood glucose to determine classical symptoms of diabetes. According to the research done by American doctors association, only laboratory venous glucose measurement results should be utilized in the diagnosis of diabetes. Urinalysis is used to determine the amount of glucose in urine. Carduivascular Risk Assessment Tools Cardiovascular risk (CVR) factors continue to the most challenging chronic complication in patients with Type1 Diabetes. From the past, the risk factors have been attributed to Type 2 diabetes and Type 1 Diabetes complicated by nephropathy (Ferranti et al., 2014). In the absence of renal disease, the assessment of Type 1 diabetes becomes difficult because of the multitude of risk factors that have been reported. Premature mortality hinders the advancement of risk assessment tools for Type1 Diabetes patients with cardiovascular risk factors. According to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), there are no recommended CV risk assessment tools to measure Type 1 Diabetes. The assessment tools based on the Framingham risk equation are known to overestimate the of a population. The assessment tools are not recommended in Type 1 Diabetes patients because they at a high danger of using antithrombotic, antihypertensive and lipid-lowering therapies(Harrison, 2001). NICE recommends the use of statin in adult patients with Type1 Diabetes. Assessment of CVD in type 1 diabetes patients requires the physician to apply CAD evaluation and diagnostic measures used in type 2 diabetes. Treadmill testing is recommended a tool for patients with Type1 Diabetes. However, it is not used due to the burden of neuropathy and ECG abnormalities. Assessment tools such as ADA risk and Atherosclerosis Risk tools assist in diagnosis, but their effectiveness in type 1 diabetes is not evident. Assessment of the risk of CVD in type 1 diabetes is challenging because there no danger scores identified on a regular clinical setting. The Steno Type 1 Risk Engine helps in implementation of decision rules to predict Cardiovascular Disease Event in Type 1 Diabetes in clinical settings. Noninvasive tests have been recommended to detect early sub-clinical damage (Anagnostis and Godsland, 2015). Research carried out...
