Is it possible to produce value-free political theory?
A lingering and continuous contentious subject has remained to be a question on whether a value-free political theory approach is achievable or desirable in the first place. Some scholars defines political theory as political thought born out of a study based on ideas and doctrines, more so, the theories are looked at from the perspective of governance whereby governments wield power for the sake of exercising legitimacy and authority.
Furthermore, an interpretation of the Oxford English dictionary’s definition of ‘Political theory’ as the ‘art and science of directing and administering States and other political units’ is that political theory is a body of knowledge developed to describe, explain, and probably predict political events and realities. That means that there’s intentionality among the theorizers. Intention implies a desire for a set of values. Production also implies deliberate action which is possible only if there’s a desired set of values (Hornby et al., 2015).
So in essence if there’s a value free political theory, then it must value ‘valueless-ness’; commitment not to desire any set of outcomes. For a system to produce such a commitment then it must be autonomous (Oxford English dictionary). But for an entity to be autonomous it must have rule of law. This implies that for an entity to be both autonomous and under law then it must be a universal set in a world. So yes in this case it is possible (Hornby et al., 2015)
