How Inner Work Life Relates to Commitment

Article Summary
“Inner Work Life: Understanding the Subtext of Business Performance” by Amabile and Kramer in 2015 examines the significance of inner work life and how managers can utilize it to boost workers’ performances. Although one can understand another’s encounters and interactions through observations, they cannot predict their perceptions, emotions, or motivation. When things happen in workplaces, they activate employees’ motivational, cognitive, and emotional responses (Amabile &Kramer, 4). Whether or not motivation and positive emotions help improve performance has become controversial. Some people believe that workers will likely perform better due to passion for work or when they are happier, while others claim that great pleasure undermines individuals’ performances. However, the benefits of being motivated or more joyful outweigh the disadvantages.
Next, Amabile and Kramer evaluate how inner work life relates to commitment, creativity, collegiality, and productivity. Many individuals perform well under positive perceptions and emotions, and inherent motivation. An individual’s passion for work will likely boost their creativity (Amabile & Kramer, 9). At the same time, positive emotions improve one’s ability to think creatively. Perceiving leaders as cooperative enables workers to develop significant ideas, enhancing their creativity. Generally, inner work life determines an individual’s creativity, commitment, collegiality, and productivity.
Lastly, the article examines how managerial behaviors influence employees’ ability to perform tasks. Managers do not concern themselves with workers’ inner lives or acknowledge their role in improving performance and productivity. First, managers offering adequate time and resources will likely compel employees to perform better by eliminating unnecessary pressure (Amabile & Kramer, 11). At the same time, reacting well to employees’ successes and failures helps them improve their performances. Therefore, managers should understand their subordinates’ positive and negative perceptions or emotions.
