TV Script: Susie Wolff
Good evening to all our dear viewers watching us from different parts of the world and welcome to the BBC's special feature about the journey of Susie Wolff, I am Jenifer Schimper.
The long awaited participation of a female driver in the Formula One Championships race will be over soon, with the nomination of Susie Wolff for the 2014 British Grand Prix competition by Williams. It has been 22 years since a female driver, Giovanna Amati from Italy, participated in the Brazilian Grand Prix race.
Susie Wolff, a 31 year old British driver of Scottish origin, is currently living in Ermatingen, Switzerland with her husband, Toto Wolff, the executive director of Mercedes AMG PETRONAS formula one team. Her expanded role in Williams will enable her participate in the free practice sessions at Silverstone, the Germany Grand Prix in July, as well as in the in-season test for the British team (Georgiou, 2012).
Wolff began her career at a very tender age. She started with karting then proceeded to formula one Renault, and was upgraded to formula three before competing for Mercedes Benz in DTM. Wolff won her first title in 1996 at the age of fourteen as the British woman kart race driver of the year, a title she retained for four consecutive years i.e. between 1996 and 1999. In 1997, she was ranked first in the 24 hour Middle East Championship after winning both the Scottish junior intercontinental "A" and the Scottish junior intercontinental "B" categories.
That was not all for this exemplary female rally driver. The new millennium ushered in more opportunities for Susie Wolff.
In 2000, competing in British formula "A" championship where she was ranked 10th overall, she was named the top female kart driver in the world. She later joined the single seater race to compete in the formula Renault. In 2003, she was selected as one of the finalists in BRDC McLaren Auto sport young driver of the year award and was also named the BRDC rising star of the year. She competed for three seasons in the formula Renault up to 2004.
Wolff's career got a minor setback in the year 2005. She enrolled for British formula three championship but her season was cut short by an ankle injury. This forced her to bid the championship bye, although she had really hoped to win. The driver was back in business in 2006, and continued with her winning spree.
Susie Wolff's major breakthrough came in April 2012 when she joined Williams formula one team as a development driver, a role that will see her compete in the two free practice sessions at German, as well as the British Grand Prix. This will see her break a dormancy period, as she will become the first woman to participate in the championships since 1992. She played a valuable role in the development of the FW34, FW35 and the latest Williams Mercedes FW36 during the time she worked as a development driver (Georgiou, 2012).
Speaking on behalf of Williams about Susie’s continued role in the team, Pat Symonds, the chief technical officer had this to say:
Jenifer: what is your take on Susie wolf continued role in the team?
Pat Symonds: Susie is a valuable member of the team and drivers’ line up. She is promising and her spirit will see her take more responsibilities this year. She has natural talent and passion in developing cars and is a perfect march for the team for developing cars in the course of the year. (Duncan, 2014).
On her part, Susie Wolff had this to say:
Jenifer: What is your opinion of the continued role you play at Williams?
Susie: Am very grateful for the opportunity, support and belief that Williams’s team continue to show me and I really appreciate. I really work hard also to be where I am
Jenifer: What are your expectations this year this year?
Susie: I want to achieve a lot this year including participating and winning the grand prix completion. I believe I will achieve a milestone in my career this year.
Jenifer: How do you feel about the races you will take part in later this year?
Susie: Taking part in the races is a big step in my career and am looking forward for it and hoping for the best. I will do my level best to achieve my target goals and that of my team. Thank you.
Jenifer: Thank you for your comments
