The main premise upon which this sermon is based is the fact that humans are not supposed to be wicked, and if they are they should be aware of the fact that God will not spare them, unless they repent and return to him (Edwards, 2003). Edwards says that there are those whom God has already shown his wrath. That does not mean that simply because there are those that are still live and have not seen his wrath are free. As long as they are wicked, they should be aware of the fact that eventually, God will punish them for their wrongdoings. Additionally, he says that God also intends to punish even those that have already been dealt with by the law here on earth (Edwards, 2003).
Occasion
The speech is not intended for any specific occasion since most of the illustrations are regarding the daily lives of humans and how they wrong God with their behavior.
Audience
The intended audience for this sermon is people who are sinful and are not mindful of the requirements of God regarding how they should behave. Edwards relays to the audience that God is very angry at the way that humans have chosen to live their lives. In the Holy book, there is no mention of God saving people once they have entered the hell fire for their wrongdoings. He also explains that the evil should be very afraid because the punishment will be more painful than they can ever imagine (Edwards, 2003). He says that God will descend on them without warning and will allow the devil to take the evil ones and claim them as his own.
Purpose
The main purpose of the message is to persuade the audience to change their way and live according to how God wants them to.
