AVIA 3130 - Leadership in the Aviation Industry
Homework #2
Chapter 3
The Boyd Task Force submitted in October 1965 recommendations proposing the establishment of a Department of Transportation which would have under its umbrella the Bureau of Public Roads, Federal Aviation Agency, the Coast Guard, the subsidy function of the Civil Aeronautics Board, the Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation, the Car Service Division of the Interstate Commerce Commission, the Great Lakes Pilotage Association, and the Panama Canal. The Department officially opened for business in April 1967. The departments/administrations under the Agency would be tasked with the coordination and effectively management of transportation programs, providing leadership in transportation problems resolution, and developing national transportation programs and policies.
The Federal Aviation Agency (FAA) is a creation of the 1958 Federal Aviation Act which gave it wide-ranging authority to fight aviation hazards as well expansive rulemaking powers and the sole responsibility for maintaining and developing a common military-civil system of air traffic control and air navigation control. Congress gave it power to lay down aircraft noise standards in 1968. "The furlough of FAA and NTSB accident investigators may violate the main treaty setting the standards for air safety among the 192 nations of the ICAO”. (). As a consequence of this, U.S. airlines do face some possible repercussions for non compliance with failing to comply with ICAO rules because FAA lawyers have made that difficult.
The Transport Security Administration is charged with developing policies to guard U.S. transportation and oversees security for mass transit systems: ports, railroads, buses, highways and pipelines. The bulk of its efforts are mainly in aviation security and it is responsible for screening passengers, checked and carry-on baggage at the more than 450 airports in the US.
Chapter 4
There are plans to upgrade ATC because erroneously the congestion being experience is being placed on general aviation which if enacted could see light planes and business aircraft getting lesser and lesser access to airports in favor of airlines. The fact is that general aviation is the largest segment of the industry. The planned legislation proposes to triple fuel levies on general aviation while eliminating the same for airlines. The plan which envisages the AIA being controlled by a powerful non-elected board would see the general aviation sector being sidelined hence their move to form the breakaway GAMA.
Recent market trends have seen new wave of air trade shows where marketers are attempting to prop up declining aircraft sales. "Despite the caution among corporate customers, the jet makers are riding a wave of new wealthy individuals who want, and are buying, their own planes”. (Philip LeBeau).
The number of female active pilots in the US as of at the end of 2005 numbered 42,510 while the males numbered 645,000, bringing the total to 687510. While learning to fly may be open to the general populace and is accessible to many, when it comes to personal flying, it could be termed as a rich man’s club due to the factors associated with owning a plane or helicopter or the steep charges for hiring per hour which are normally beyond the reach of many.
Chapter 5
The passage of The Airline Deregulation Act in passed in October 1978 has formalized a number of momentous changes in Federal regulations and policies aimed at making air transportation more efficient and open and curb the then existing problems associated with earlier Acts and Laws. (Samuel E. Eastman, 2010)
The tree 401 certification stipulates that no air carrier will engage in air transportation unless a certificate issued by the secretary authorizing such engagement. The industry has seen a slump in terms of profits and the major losses experience in 200 can be associated with new operating environments, bankruptcy and shut downs, regulation vs. liberalization, rising costs in terms of fuel, labor, maintenance, and security and new restructuring and alliances.
Chapter 11
Air express is an express air service for sipping small packages while airfreight can be termed as an organized system of transporting fright by air whilst air mail service is normally undertaken by a government agency to send mail by air. The concept of Federal Express lies in a system of routing packages through one central hub and has revolutionalised cargo and mail transportation into a well synchronized national exercise.
The arrival of the wide body jumbo jet has transformed intercontinental flying in that large numbers of passengers and cargo can be transported in one large cr...
