Chapter 2: Literature Review
Introduction
This section reviews the extant literature on the issue of fake news. The chapter aims at defining the term fake news. Also, an evaluation of all the channels that are used to spread fake news is conducted. Looking at channels used to provide fake news is essential since it gives insight into the ways of curbing fake news. The coronavirus pandemic has crippled the world with world economies being put on a standstill grinding to a halt owing to associated lockdowns, restrictions and curfews imposed. Fake news regarding the coronavirus pandemic has been widespread, leading to a lot of fear and panic across the world. This section reviews the literature on fake news surrounding the pandemic. Besides, insight into the adverse consequences of counterfeit information on society is provided. An assessment of strategies that the government can take control of fake news is also offered.
What is Fake News?
Fake information has been there long before the advent of the internet. Traditionally, information was dispersed through a variety of methods that didn't include the internet. Despite that, fake news was common among the communities of those times. The definitions of the term fake news are numerous, with many authors having tried to define the term. Foremost, Aldwairi and Alwahedi (2018) describe fake news as “fictitious articles deliberately fabricated to deceive readers.” The authors refer to fake news as hoaxes coined by various platforms to deceive readers. Shu et al. (2017) offer an alternative definition by referring to fake news as low-quality news which contains false information.
