Leadership and Management
Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background
In contemporary times, it is apparent that leadership styles directly impact an employee's job satisfaction. An effective style of leadership influences changes and form the transformation impetus in an organisation. Copious companies have specific leadership styles based on different needs, such as job performance and employee satisfaction (Payne, 2017). However, the two famous companies whose leadership styles have contributed significantly to their success are Apple and Tesla Inc. Apple is considered one of the most significant companies in history with a current trillion-dollar valuation (Payne, 2017). It is mainly a technology company with its headquarters in California, Cupertino. Steve Jobs, together with the help of Steve Wozniak, as well as Ronald Wayne, started the Apple Inc. in 1976 in Cupertino, California (Payne, 2017). Upon the death of its founding C.E.O, Tim Cook took over the leadership but with a divergent leadership style from its founder. During the era of Steve Jobs, the leadership of Apple Inc. was autocratic because he micro-managed a broad array of business functions (Zhang, 2017). Nevertheless, the leadership of the company has dramatically changed under Tim Cook. Many employees at Apple Inc. have praised Tim Cook for his democratic style of leadership, which has inspired them and improved their job satisfaction.
On the other hand, Tesla, Inc. is an American vehicle company, which is based in California, Palo Alto. The company primarily specializes in the manufacturing of electric cars, energy battery storage, and also solar panels (Chen, Chowdhury, and Donada, 2019). It was founded by Marc Trpeing and Martin Eberhard in 2003. Unlike most leaders in the technology industry Elon Musk is believed to be practising transformational leadership. Remarkably, the leadership style has helped Tesla Inc. to make some of the most innovative products, such as electric cars (Israfilov et al., 2020). As such, Elon Musk always works with his teams to identify the required change, create a vision in guiding the change, and execute it using committed group members in the company. Therefore, it is easier to company the leadership style of both Apple and Tesla on employee job satisfaction because they are all successful technology companies found in California, with different leadership styles.
