TITLE Collaborative Leadership: A study of the Leadership of through Life Capability Maintenance of Warships of the United Kingdom’s Royal Navy
Project submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the Master of Business Administration of the University of Cumbria & RKC
Leadership is important for not only the business world but also for not-for-profit organisations and governments. Specifically, collaborative leadership has received limited attention in the Royal Navy. The dissertation studies whether collaborative leadership develops a teamwork culture that encourages implementation of innovative warship maintenance strategies that lower costs, improve efficiency, as well as enhance availability and punctuality. The dissertation utilises structured interview, observations, and warship maintenance documentations to collect data. The interviews are performed among the leaders of the Royal Navy’s contractors, warship manufacturers, warship maintainers, as well as manufacturers of warship parts and equipment. The dissertation also employs qualitative method to analyse data, where the dominant themes are leadership, collaboration, collaborative leadership, teamwork, and efficiency. The study reveals that collaborative leadership develops a teamwork culture based on trust and open communication. Collaborative leadership enables sharing of resources and expertise, which lowers costs. The dissertation recommends that the Royal Navy should implement collaborative leadership in order to create a culture of teamwork in order to lower costs, enhance efficiency, and ensure availability.
