Introduction
The companies I have chosen is Proctor & Gamble Co (PG), Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ), Nike Inc. (NKE), Visa Inc. (V) and Microsoft Corp (MSFT). They are all part of the Dow Jones Industrial Average. All these stocks belong to defensive picks meaning that failure for the company to pay dividends are very minimal. Choosing to invest in defensive companies’ means the investor has very low chances of getting a loss on the investment over a long period.
Defensive stocks are the ones for the companies with the market capitalization of above $50 billion. These stocks serve as conservative picks for the investor since in many instances companies on this category have a record of more than 10 years of paying dividends without any interruptions. In most cases, a dividend payment can differ from company to company but many opt for an annual basis. However, some companies have a dividend payment plan for semiannual, quarterly, or monthly basis. Additionally, the percentage of the net income that is used to pay the dividends must be below 85%.
