Working Capital Management
Proper working capital management is critical in ensuring that funds are put into best use and properly utilized in day-to-day operations. I think the concept of working capital management is important to the company as it is to the chief finance officer (CFO). The firm’s cash flows is mainly from operations but can be used for investing and financing activities. When in need of cash, I came to know that the company can convert short-term assets quickly into cash. However, there are concerns about holding and shortage costs associated with the current assets. I think most of the time the low rates on short-term debts are subject to changes since it can be rolled over. I realized that liquidity was the issue and could be obtained through primary or secondary methods.
Working capital management is wide in scope and involves transactions, financial institutions, analytical processes and emerging liquidity issues. I understand that financing policies differ with firms depending on whether they are conservative or aggressive. Aggressive companies tend to finance their activities with short-term liabilities despite having low amounts of current assets. On the other hand, conservative firms finance their projects with long-term debt and have high amounts of current assets. I learned that cash management policy can be influenced by internal and external factors. While internal factors can be size, organizational structure, processes and investing positions, external factors involve interest rate, economy and new technologies.
