The Girl Before a Mirror is one of Pablo Picasso’s 20th century works that adopted new highlights, in addition to heralding a new age in art. The painting adopted a technique called cubism, which involved the creation of movement and direction through the elements of art. Although Picasso faced some criticisms for the marvelous piece of art, the painting remains one the of the most celebrated paintings in the United States that ushered in modernism. The artist employed various art elements in the painting, including line, color, and shape. The elements of art blended to create various impressions reminiscent of the principles of design. This paper analyses Pablo Picasso’s painting Girl Before a Mirror with regard to its background and key elements.
Background
Pablo Picasso played an important role in the revolution of art from the then renaissance form to modernism. Through his artistic forms known as cubism, Pablo Picasso portrayed a new perspective of art in his early 20th century paintings. Although the artist made a number of paintings, his outstanding painting Girl Before a Mirror offered a new perspective in terms of paving the way for modernism (Charles & Podoksik, 2018). Although many critics of Picasso’s work considered the painting to erotic for the renaissance period, Picasso’s Cubism ushered in a liberal era in art. The artist employed various elements and principles of art in his painting to portray a young woman named Marie Therese Walter looking into a reflection of herself through a mirror.
