The Most Important Man Made Structure in the World
Many man-made structures have been constructed across the world. Among them, the most famous include the pyramids of Giza in Egypt, the Statue of Liberty in the United States, the houses of parliament in London, and the Eiffel Tower in Paris. However, the most important man-made structures are chosen by considering the extent to which they assist humanity in achieving various goals. Based on this deliberation, bridges emerge as the most significant category and the Jiaozhou Bay Bridge in China stands out as the most important man-made structure in the world. Other significant bridges include Lake Pontchartrain Causeway, Manchac Swamp Bridge, Atchafalaya Basin Bridge, Penang Bridge, and Rio-Niteroi Bridge.
Also referred to as Qingdao Haiwan Bridge, the construction of this bridge was completed in the year 2011 when it was subsequently opened for use. It replaced the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway Bridge as the world's longest bridge on the surface of water (Terryn, 2011). It is located in eastern China's Shandong province and is within a large scale project named the Jiaozhou Bay Connection Project. As listed in the Guinness World Records, the bridge is approximately twenty six miles, a length never achieved by any bridge on water before its existence (Inch, 2012).
The links of this bridge present four different connections in two sections that head to different locations. As presented by (Inch, 2012), the bridge project has two major sections which are non-connected. The first is about thirty five kilometres long and is the major Jiaozhou Bay Bridge. It is a long expressway mounted on water and supported by concrete and steel banking. The other which is also an expressway is approximately six kilometres and makes up the Qingdao Jiaozhou Bay Tunnel. Czinkota and Ronkainen (2013) provided a simplified analysis of the four parts forming the Jiaozhou Bay Bridge. These include a two kilometer connection at the Hangdao Island, approximately one kilometer long connection referred to as the Huangdao side land bridge, a longer but similar side land bridge at Qingdao, which is approximately 5.8 kilometres, and the longest part which is the Jiaozhou Bay Bridge with 26.7 kilometres.
The features that make the bridge significant relate to its role in transport, its facilitation of connectivity, and functions in trade and commerce. As noted by (Terryn, 2011), the first achievement in the construction of the bridge was the reduction of distance connecting Huangdao and Qingdao by approximately half and those of other cities considerably. Mainly, it acts as a major connection between the island of Hongdao and other mainland cities, especially in Huangdao District. Czinkota and Ronkainen (2013) opined that easy and improved road transport was achieved when the bridge was opened. This is because it carries more than ten thousand vehicles every day. This makes it fall among the busiest bridges in the world....
