Taxonomic classification can be traced back to when the classification was based on two living; animal and vegetable and one non-living; mineral. This reflected rudimentary classification before rigorous research and analysis of organisms was conducted. This three-kingdom perception developed into four by the division of microbes into two kingdoms, Protoctista and Monera. Protoctista comprised single-celled eukaryotes while Monera composed of prokaryotes. Four kingdoms evolved further into five in 1969 when Robert Whittaker discerned that Fungi could be put into their own class.
