Junk food consumption has increased drastically over the past few decades. According to a report by Borraccino et al. (2016), children in the United States derive an estimated 30 percent of their daily diet from sweetened drinks and fast foods. The immense consumption of junk food has adverse community health problems that pose a risk to future generations. The junk food consumption paradigm is due to the low cost and deceptive marketing vices associated with the food industry. Therefore, in this article, the causes and adverse effects of eating junk food will be discussed.

Junk food is cheaper compared to other healthier foods. The cheap cost of fast producing fast foods attracts people to buy and consume more. The cost factor also means that junk food is easily accessible to low-income communities. Such communities depend heavily on junk food for nutrition since they cannot afford other foods. Furthermore, according to Burgoine et al. (2018), junk food companies target low-income areas where they offer large portions at a low cost. The large portion and low prices make the food attractive to buyers making them eat more. Thus, inexpensiveness attracts people to eat junk over other foods.
