Macromolecules, Dehydration Reaction, and Hydrolysis (Essay Sample)
In Wk 1 we explored the levels of biological organization. This week we delve further into one of these levels: molecules. Specifically, we focus on macromolecules, which have unique properties resulting from their structure and are essential for living organisms.
Respond to the following in a minimum of 275 words:
Describe the 4 main classes of macromolecules and how are they structured.
What is the difference between a dehydration reaction and hydrolysis?
If you eat a piece of fish, what reactions must occur for the amino acid monomers in the protein of the fish to be converted to new proteins in your body?

A macromolecule refers to a very large molecule made up of small units called monomers. There exist four major biological macromolecules namely Carbohydrates, Proteins, Lipids, and Nucleic acids ("3: Biological Macromolecules", 2020). Carbohydrates are generally energy building due to them being broken down to obtain glucose which provides organisms with energy. Proteins have generally different functions but the main being structural repair and maintenance of organisms. Lipids in most cases store energy in form of fat and can also help insulate the body of an organism in adverse weather conditions. Nucleic acids carry the genetic information of an organism that can be transferred to another organism through reproduction.
Dehydration reaction occurs when monomers break away from each other thereby releasing a water molecule. This
