Howard Gardner’s (1983) theory of multiple intelligence involves the use of various intelligence to emphasize various strengths that people have towards learning. It encourages learners to make use of their strengths and talents in learning and interaction with various content. Educators who understand the theory of multiple intelligence allow learners to make use of their strongest intelligence to learn and understand best. Some learners need different learning and teaching strategies to fully understand ideas. Having an understanding of this theory is thus paramount for an experienced nurse to teach the novice nurse in a manner that they can well understand. The experienced nurse can utilize the beginning nurses strengths to teach them on how to properly make a bed for instance. Nurses should have the ability to demonstrate enough knowledge in critical reflection which is important when applying these skills in practice.
The four multiple intelligences from Gardner’s list include linguistic intelligence, bodily-kinesthetic intelligence, interpersonal intelligence, and intrapersonal intelligence. Linguistic intelligence deals with the ability to learn languages, being sensitive to the spoken and written languages, and the ability to use language to carry out certain goals.
