Soil Washing above Ground
There was a hydrocarbon leak in the area of onshore, and the soil on the shore was contaminated by the hydrocarbon pollutant. There are other methods of cleaning the onshore; however, soil washing is recommended as the leak is very large. With the leakage, the hydrocarbons could prove futile for human interaction with the onshore. Soil washing is a method that is recommended by soil experts in the permanent removal of these pollutants in the soil. Here, washing agents are used to treat the soil off the toxic pollutants. Soil washing is an ex-situ technology whose primal aim is to remove toxic heavy metals and organic pollutants from the ground. The concept is dependent on the theory that the polluting agents are to bind to fine grained soils, which are then prone to bind to coarse grained soils. With such, the goal is to remove the hydrocarbon particles from the onshore using the soil washing method.
The physiochemical process of soil washing above ground involves desorption, dissolution, and oxidation-reduction. Metz, (2013, n.p) acknowledges that desorption occurs when the washed water together with additives, mixes with the soil. He further adds that during this stage, the contaminants are desorbed from the soil surface.; thus, cleaning the soil particles. In dissolution, it occurs as a result of acid-base reactions between the washing agents and the
