Education sector of Italy is of different stages that are divided into five stages; kindergarten, primary school, lowers secondary school, upper secondary school, and university (Anastasiou et al., 2015). Every child is to be educated compulsory from the age of six to sixteen years. Education is usually free, and in this case, every child is entitled to attend those schools in spite of the nationality that the child comes. Schools in Italy are either public or private schools, but public schools are considered to be of high quality on the side of education quality and labor marketability. Most people like to take their children in public schools because they are taken care of well and giving children high-quality education. Most public schools in Italy are under government sector, and they provide a lot to such schools like high-quality books and other facilities like classes are ensured to be constructed well, food is plentiful, and many more.
The education sector began in Italy from 1859 whereby not every child got chance to go to school during that period. Illiteracy was of high percentage that is approximately 80% in primary education. The state looked at the situation of how many people did not go to school and from this notice there was a law that was made called The Casati Act (1861) which indicated that every child must go to school (Pagano, 2017). The Casati Act was considered to be good idea whereby every place even in rural areas primary schools was constructed and so percentage (90%) of those going to school increased. As years passed by there was a law that was made concerning Italian education sector which is the Legge Gentile (1923) which raised compulsory education at the age of fourteen years. This meant that after first five years of studying in primary school, a student could choose the secondary school he wants and later join university for further studies, or even attend other institutions for training to work on the specific job. Education continued to be improved, and technical institutions were formed and other industrial institutions in which a student wants to study.
Current analysis of Italian education sector
Italian education improved whereby more and more schools are constructed even for mixed schools (males and females). Up to date, every child is attending a school whether that is mixed or of one gender. Currently, university sector in Italy improves by the state whereby is divided into two parts; three years Bachelor’s Degree and Masters Degree. A student first joins the university to study Bachelor’s Degree then later joins Masters Degree course of choice. Now in Italy, university education part, to study the degree of law takes five years and degree of medicine is six years.
Public schools in Italy comprises if primary, secondary, and university. Public schools especially primary schools are free, most children are taken to such schools since they are considered to have a high-quality education, and there are excellent facilities. Other schools, which are private, are under specific religion control for example catholic primary, secondary, or university schools are under Catholic Church. In public schools, every child from any denomination and nationality attends there. Public education is always under governement who offers everything that is needed to be in schools like books and other facilities. Most public schools are built in most parts of Italy in both rural and urban areas. This means that Italy is divided into two regions that is northern Italy, which is the urban side, and southern Italy is of rural areas. From this analysis, north Italy has the best and highly qualified public schools compared to south Italy, which is in the rural areas. Most people choose to take their children in urban areas because public schools perform well and have highly qualified education facilities like classes are well built, there are enough books, plenty of food, and many more. Rural public education is of low qualification because not many teachers choose to be employed there and the way also rural areas are seen is of poor background that is why people want urban public schools.
In public education, the English language taught as the second language. Italian words and cultural classes are the sessions that are taught as the first. Italians prefer their children to know more about their culture and that is why until now Italy still sticks to their culture more. Understanding the Italian language is also another essential thing for parents to see their children learning their words compared to English. Most of them do not know English, so when they attend public schools English is also taught but as the second language.
Market analysis of the Italian public education sector
Primary schools in public education sector in Italy increased in the year 2014 approximately three million children in seventeen primary schools. In these public schools, about 250.2 thousand teachers work there. The lower secondary schools in 2014 enrolled 1.7 million pupils. According to statistics, it is said that 57% of people aged 25 years and above have attained upper secondary schools or tertiary education in 2015.
As years went by until now, Italy has registered high percentage of students in the public education sector. The rate is continuing to rise since most people realized the importance of getting an education is that they will learn more even new ideas that they did not know in life and many more. There is no much competition in the public education sector since most parents would want to take their children in public schools because of lack of money to pay school fees in private schools. Public schools are free since the government sponsors them and caters for everything that is needed. More public schools are improving in education performance so that they can educate more students. Having high performance creates the right image for schools and positive reputation, and from this analysis, no parent would not want to take their children to a performing school. Parents who come from poor background are usually helped by the government to sponsor their children in public schools. There is a challenge that public schools encounter when many families take their children in public schools causing the school to overcrowding and the management has no option but to select some students and leave others. Most public schools in Italy choose who to enroll and who should not by looking at performances of a child. This takes place in secondary schools checking at students’ performance from previous primary schools’ results.
In public schools, the managers of the schools are the governing body, which comprises of specific parents and schools’ stakeholders. Parents in this matter are in charge to see that children are taken care of in schools and speak on behalf of other parents concerning ideas that they need to be raised. Stakeholders, on the other hand, support the school regarding finances and supplies of the school’s facilities. Public schools in Italy are in charge with matters concerning staffs’ recruitment, payment of staffs, discipline, dismissing staffs, how teachers should teach, and organize the schools’ curriculum. The public schools’ management is always in charge of their schools’ performances academic wise.
Public schools performances in Italy are looked at according to performances that students perform. When students perform very well making the school to rank at the top position, such students are considered to be “gifted.” This means that they are geniuses. Upper public secondary schools are noticed to perform exceptionally well compared to lower public secondary schools. Most people may conclude that most wealthy parents take their children in private schools, but that is not true. Most parents bring their children in public schools since they know public schools perform exceptionally well and children can acquire high quality of education. A student obtaining high quality of education is the most important thing that every parent can want for his or her child.
Most public schools in Italy welcome children from other countries to attend their school. In 2004 was noticed that number of students from other schools who attended public schools in Italy was 4.2% and increased in 2014 to 9.2%. More are born in Italy. Most of them participate in public schools, which are in the northern part of Italy compared to Southern.
