Leadership is an essential part of management and success of organizations. The research on leadership various perspectives on the process and style of leadership. Power in leadership is defined as the ability of the person in authority to get people to get the work that he or she needs them to perform. The power can be exercised horizontally, upward and downward in organizations (Rue, Byars, & Ibrahim, 2013).
Authority is the right to issue directives and expand resources. It depends on the amount of legitimate power, coercive, and reward that the manager can exert. It is a function of the hierarchy of organizations that flows from the top to the bottom of the organization. Finally, leadership is one’s ability to influence his subordinates to willingly follow directives or adhere to decisions. Leaders in organizations utilize their power to control group behavior. Some managers apply authority while others combine various forms of power. This paper will draw on the concepts of planning and organizing and apply critical thinking to detect issues and best course of action (Rue, Byars, & Ibrahim, 2013).
Styles of leadership
Research has indicated that there are three basic styles of leadership. This includes autocratic, democratic, and Laissez-faire. Autocratic leaders often make the decisions for the team, while the laissez-faire allows room for the members of the group to make all the decisions. The democratic leaders guide and encourage the group in making all the decisions. Democratic style of leadership has been established to be the most productive. In autocracy, the leader is conscious of his position and he has minimal faith in the members of his group. They expect orders to be issued without questioning and that payment is the only reward that can motivate the employees. In Laissez-Faire the leader is not confident of their ability and they do not set goals for the group. In the democratic style, the leaders and the group are responsible for decision making. Criticism and praise should be given independently and when the leaders are forced to make decisions, they have to explain their reasoning (Rue, Byars, & Ibrahim, 2013).
The effective leadership in an organization creates a vision for the future that takes into consideration the parties that are involved in the organization. It also provides a strategy for moving towards the vision, lists the support of the employees to produce movement, as well as motivates them to execute the strategy. Effective leadership and management should therefore be applied to attain the organizational success (Hair, Bush, & Ortinau, 2003).
Style of leadership that William will use with Rusty
Rusty’s style of leadership is mostly autocratic. His emphasis is on the process of production and producing products of the same quality. The members of his group do not have any responsibility in the process of production. The group is not motivated and they only perform well when he is around and poorly when he is absent. William’s style, on the other hand, is democratic which is demonstrated by the involvement of the operative employees in making decisions. He also welcomes suggestions from the group and put in place a performance appraisal system that will ensure that the group strives to be better at their areas. William will have to use a democratic style of leadership with Rusty to ensure that he understands the benefits that are associated with the style (Judge...
