The Deep in The Republic Of Chevron
The Deep in The Republic Of Chevron is a case about the the local community pitting the Chevron oil Company in the the delta region of southern Nigeria. The main target in this case are Leonard Hutto, the Chevron operations superintendent that covers the eastern Niger Delta and Tony Okoaye who is the Hutto’s assistant of the Nigerian section. The main targeted individual here was Tony Okoaye who is always on the ground where the villagers invaded and they held him captive. Actually, the villagers referred him to a "big man" and ordered him to shut down all the oil wells in the area. The villagers had a number of demands including 25 employments on the spot (Onishi, 1999).
. The incidents that was happening at that moment was that Okoaye was taken hostage by the villagers of about 400 and brandishing machetes. The problem was how to reason with the people who took Okoaye hostage because the author claimed that many of them were high on marijuana or were drunk. Concurrently, the meeting that was held in a village to hear the community demands and grievances was not actually fruitful since the problem that arose is that their graveness were to high to be met. Their demands that were challenging to meet were: 25 jobs on the spot, approximately $27,000 in cash and an unspecified amount for the money they spent while invading the oil station (Onishi, 1999).
The main cause of the problem is the issue of unemployment. During the Hutto’s meeting with the villagers, they demanded among other thing 25 jobs on the spot. To justify this, the youths who invaded the oil station got contented when in the meeting with the villagers Hutto gave them only $20 and another $20 to another group of youths that had inflated the tires of his Toyota vehicle to refill it . In fact they were contented with this small amount of money until they released Okoaye and allowed the re-opening of the oil well. If they could have been having employment they could have not demanded for 25 jobs on the spot and also they could have not seen the meager $20 as some good amount of money. Another problem was inadequate scholarships that the villagers are getting for the youngsters.
