INTRODUCTION
Diversity in teamwork is a crucial factor to consider as a prerequisite for better results or developmental achievements in any group or society. It refers to the differences that exist amongst a group of people. It allows individuals from diverse backgrounds with reference to educational, cultural or gender to participate in working towards a common goal of that particular team.
The spirit of teamwork is a very indispensable aspect of any society or group geared towards achieving its objectives, visions, and developmental agenda. Previously people thought that it was beneficial for people to work together who have many similarities. Our article will establish the value of diversity and its overall input into management.
MAIN BODY
It is very paramount to note that everyone in this world is born unique and endowed with special abilities that when blended together in a team set up, better, and desired results are achieved. Giving an example of a football team, one is good at goalkeeping, another player good at striking yet another best at defending. Each and every person is given an opportunity to display his or her expertise and hence enhancing the common good of the group ( Kearney, Gebert,& Voelpel,2009).
A company can achieve its goals when these people of diverse backgrounds are tasked. They all bring their input to the team thus moving it a notch higher. For example, men and women are different in the way they perceive and do things. Thus having them in the same group means that the organization will benefit from their unique traits. Men are good organizers while women are keen to detail. An organization with both genders will be well organized, and no detail will be lost.
Both single and married have unique advantages when working in a team. For the single, the work is their all, and they have nothing to sidetrack them. They are usually available all the time. Although due to lack of responsibilities, they may not give their best, unlike their married counterparts. The married can work under pressure knowing that they have responsibilities.
Working with both young and the old in an organization offers significant advantages. The young bring vigor and energy into the team while the old offer advice and experience. Without both young and old in a group, it may lack strength, energy, and new technological trends offer by the youth. On the other hand, leaving the old out of the equation means that the team will not gain wisdom provided by them.
Diversity can be one of the team's greatest asset. For instance, in modern organizations, the employees are recruited based on the background of origin, gender, age, walks of life or profession, and countries around the world. People will come from various ethnic, cultural, educational and experiential backgrounds. The team will probably have the married and single team members. Each of this diversity has a very significant influence on the performance of the team. When people bring different work and life experiences, viewpoints, and talents to a group, there are more opportunities for quality decision-making. Through teamwork, people can tear down barriers to working together. In partnership situation, where all members are trying to improve the team, there is less likelihood that people will harbor, either consciously or unconsciously, a sense of superiority (Swann, Polzer, Style,& Ko,2004).
When teams diversify, new opportunities are often discovered. By Introducing fresh ideas and perspectives, the workforce may be able to think about new products, services or new ideas on how to solve a particular problem are injected into the system.
Team members from diverse backgrounds can come up with new ideas that would make the entire group adaptable to changes or adverse conditions. Diversity encountered could help build strong partnerships hence enabling people from diverse backgrounds to appreciate the cultural, racial, age, color or other significant differences.
