At-will policy cushions organizations against civil suits by employees after contract termination. Companies using employment-at-will experience frequent resignation and recruitment activities. This paper will analyze the pros and cons of employment-at-will.
Benefits of at-will policy include high levels of accuracy, minimal work boycotts and improved productivity. Employees employed under at-will policy focus on perfection since mistakes attract firing by employer. Such employees always value consultation to avoid committing mistakes that compromise quality (Coombs & Newman, 2020). Due diligence by workers is common aspect among the at-will workers. Majority of them believe in error reduction and quality improvement which gain them high reputation. Employment-at-will also demoralize work boycott in organizational setup. At-will policy disregard salary and wages negotiations by workers. Workers engaged in salary increment discussion face extreme risks of losing their employment. On the other hand at-will policy disregards representation of employees by trade unions. Rejection of trade unions in a company mitigate employee strikes supported by trade unions. As cited by Coombs & Newman, (2020), employment-at-will motivates improved productivity in workplace as low performance increases risks of employment termination.
