Lance’s approach to the project
The quality of solutions solely depends on the approach that Lance takes. The fact-finding approach of Lance is both good and plausible. It is evident that by taking a holistic approach of the organization, he would be able to determine the problems with the previous Human Resource Personnel and know the needs of the company in the area. In his approach, it is commendable that he decided to take a flexible set of questions as he set out to interview the senior executives of the company. This would increase the scope of his approach and further improve the quality of the answers that were given by the respondents (Schwind, Das, & Wagar, 2002).
Moreover, his approach is commendable to the point that he was able to determine hypotheses and set out to test their validityLance noticed that people viewed the human resource department very differently from each other. In his project, therefore, it would be easy to be objective and seek to unravel the reasons behind the problems. Hypothesis making and testing is crucial for any project, and seeks to validate the process, as well as improve the process of finding the truth (Schwind, Das, & Wagar, 2002).
It is also evident that his approach was non-discriminative and took the perspective of the most important stakeholders in the company. It is easy to identify that his approach was consistent with the organizational structure of the company, narrowing its focus to the most relevant department of his study. In this perspective, it was possible for him to get historical factors that were pertinent in the department, as well as issues that faced the department. By interviewing the various people in the organization, it was evident that he would obtain different perspectives, stereotypes and biases that would establish the needs of the corporation in terms of the human resource personnel.
However, it would be prudent to note that Lance would have been in a better position if he had spent some time to do an evaluation of the company using observational method. It would be important that he should have first established an observation of the behaviour of workers, the relationships with the top management and any other important aspects before the interviews.. This would help him understand the situation better and formulate the questions in a better way that would answer some of the doubts that he had when he used the observation method (Schwind, Das, & Wagar, 2002).
What to do
It is evident that Lance is in a dilemma on how he should act. Given the opposing situations that demand his immediate attention, he needs to prioritize his schedule in such a way that it would exploit the little amount of time that he already has.
In Lance’s position, I would first travel back to the office where the consultant has encountered an accident in the first five days. Lance will have to set systems in place in such a way that he stands in the gap left, and identifies the extent of the problem in Saskatoon to find a solution. He should realize that the problem in Maple Leaf shoes sis still pending and requiring his intervention. Therefore, he should travel back and consolidate his earlier findings from the interviews.
On his arrival at the Maple Shoe Company and do an analysis of his findings in a way that will establish the true requirements of the organization. He should use the data representation techniques such as histograms or graphs during his first day to represent the findings and manipulate the results to isolate the relevant issues out. He should proceed to compile the data concisely so
