IDENTIFYING, DEVELOPING, AND SUPPORTING CORE COMPETENCIES IN EMPLOYEES
A competency comprises any quality that furthers successful job performance. Core competencies therefore are those qualities that organizations recognize as having the most contribution towards achieving the organization’s strategic goals and objectives CITATION UOC12 \l 2057 (UOC, 2012).
HR professionals should continually focus on identifying, developing, and supporting core competencies in employees in a cyclic, integrated and synchronized manner and not just at one point. This should be done throughout going back and forth from identifying, developing and supporting employees’ core competencies. This is because the HR professionals need to stay updated on future competence requirements of the various employees of the organization and thus come up with standards that they can use to measure or assess whether employees possess the core competencies that their customers, suppliers, investors, and other stakeholders require and thus develop these competencies in their employees or source for these competencies elsewhere CITATION Ulr09 \l 2057 (Ulrich, Allen, Brockbank, Younger, & Nyman, 2009).
Some of the benefits of identifying, developing and supporting core competencies in employees include: confirming and strengthening the essential knowledge, skills and attitude sets of the employees; leads to development and utilization of clear job descriptions and work performance indicators in order to support employees’ professional development and effective staff management; working effectively and efficiently; development of the cultural and organizational support that is necessary to encourage continuous learning, sharing and knowledge application at work; identifying and responding to the ever changing training needs of employees; enables employees and their superiors to identify gaps and thus prioritise learning, training and development needs of the employees for current and future roles and responsibilities; and it also helps to plan better responses and reactions to dynamically changing and emerging needs and to improve workforce alignment CITATION Ulr09 \l 2057 \m UOC12 (Ulrich, Allen, Brockbank, Younger, & Nyman, 2009; UOC, 2012).
Identifying, developing and supporting core competencies in employees leads to: improvement of skills, knowledge and the way employees work; creation of an environment the various stakeholders work to improve the way things are done; motivates employees to improve and develop their performance; constructively challenging existing strategies; significantly contributing to continuous employee improvement; and creation of a high performance organization; improved professional and personal standing of the employees by enhancing their ability to make informed career decisions; selection of people with the right knowledge, skills and behaviours for the job; improved professional and career development planning. CITATION Hus95 \l 2057 \m Ulr09(Huselid, 1995; Ulrich, Allen, Brockbank, Younger, & Nyman, 2009).
All of the organizations stakeholders including customers, suppliers, investors, partners, etc. should be involved in identifying, developing and supporting employees’ core competencies especially during assessment and identification of the employees’ core competencies. Their evaluation and feedback is especially necessary in identifying individual employee’s core competencies and their deficiencies that they need to work on CITATION Ulr09 \l 2057 (Ulrich, Allen, Brockbank, Younger, & Nyman, 2009).
